Artist's Statement
Nicola’s work is unapologetically sentimental, striving to capture the essence of private moments using only the traces left behind. Revealing the intimacy of the human experience her work plays with the themes of love and loss. Working predominantly in the time-based mediums of film, photography, and sound, Nicola is a thief of tender moments. Fuelled by ideas not yet fully formed, shown in half-light her work takes us on a journey for meaning in a world she did not create, with histories and narratives not yet written. Her creative practice explores the depths of identity and belonging in search of a voice and a home. Her method is one of collage and fragmentation, weaving together conversations, recall, memory, and multi-representations in an intricate patchwork. She is fascinated by how stories present themselves within society and seeks to disrupt established narrative structures by creating a space that invites the viewer to slow down, and look closer. Nicola is interested in evoking emotions without explicitly describing them, her central question is one of presence. How can a creative practice keep a living dialogue between maker and audience, what lives and what dies in the process of making?
